This is the Place Heritage Park is a 450-acre Living History site that offers visitors a look at life in 19th Century Utah from the Mormon arrival in 1847 to statehood in 1896.

Things to Do at This Is the Place National Monument

Heritage Village, located within the Park, presents a pioneer experience for all ages. At Settlers' Pond, a Native American Village explores the cultures of Utah's first residents.

During your visit you will meet the strong, independent people who built Utah and experience the sights and sounds of their times. You will learn how they lived, worked and played. Whether you watch a blacksmith at work, visit a 19th century barbershop, take a carriage ride, or enjoy a treat at the Huntsman Hotel, an afternoon at Heritage Village can be magical. With more than forty historic buildings and exciting daily activities, the park offers a delightful mix of education and entertainment.

This Is The Place Monument

Just south of Heritage Village is the "This Is The Place Monument." Erected in 1947 to the centennial of Utah's settlement, this world-famous monument commemorates the location where the Mormon settlers entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. It marks the end of the 1,300 mile Mormon Pioneer Trail. It was designed by Mahonri M. Young, a grandson of Brigham Young. It was Brigham Young who declared, upon entering the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847, that it would be the new home of the Mormons who were then traveling toward Utah from the east.

Statuary Walk

This walkway along the lawns featured various sculpture and monuments highlighting pioneer life. The National Pony Express Monument also is located here.

You're welcome to bring your own picnic, but This Is the Place State Park offers some tasty (and convenient) options too.

For a Quick Snack:

ZCMI Candy Shop: Cold drinks/snacks/old-fashioned candy are sold at the ZCMI candy shop, an original building brought to the Park from central Utah.

Donut Shop: Satisfy your donut craving with Brigham's Donuts, miniature "donut gems" made fresh while you watch.

Huntsman Saloon: Cool off with a flavor burst ice cream cone, or treat yourself to a vanilla and chocolate twisty.

Visitor Center: Grab some snacks and drinks at the visitor center, located near the Village gate.

Driving Directions to This Is the Place

This Is The Place Heritage Park is located at the mouth of Emigration Canyon, across the street from Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. The Park is accessible from I-15 via the 600 South Exit (continue east on 800 South to the Park); and from I-80 via the Foothill Boulevard exit (continue north to Sunnyside Avenue, then turn east).
