Base Camp Kanab: Launch Point to Vacation
Have you ever been to Zion National Park, seen The Grand Canyon, sand boarded down the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, and stood in the shadow of The Great Chamber all in one weekend? In other words–have you stayed in Kanab, Utah? I have, multiple times. Once just isn’t enough.
The first morning the road trip crew and I woke up at Parry’s lodge to clear skies, red rocks, and the smell of a home-cooked breakfast near the lobby. Then I walked across the street, coffee in hand, to catch the sun rising over K-Hill, and a glimpse into some of the local shops. Once we packed up the gear, we were off to Zion National Park–which inevitably led to a quick stop at the sand caves just north of town. Worth it. (And the kids came with me the following year.)
By that time, we snagged lunch at Thunderbird (don’t walk, run.) Once we were on the road again I spotted some yurts in East Zion Resort– a major glamping destination where I’m planning to stay next time. Zions National Park was incredible–nobody talks about the Emerald Pools trail, but it’s a 10/10 must see – google it, then go. The photos don’t do it justice.
When we got back to town it was time for a short nap and a late dinner–we wanted something low key, but still nice. Wild Thyme was where we found it. Try the Pistachio Chicken and the Key Lime Pie. You’re welcome.
Our day wasn’t over yet–because Kanab is surrounded by dark sky locations, and the photographers in the group had been waiting for this very moment. We bundled up and made our way out to the Toadstool Hoodoos–where the trail was easy on our Zion-zapped legs, and the rock formations and starry skies rivaled every view we saw earlier in the day.
The next day we hung around town, rested up, rode some sandboards, and prepping for the Grand Canyon. But I won’t spoil anymore for you. Base Camp is for anyone and everyone, because Southern Utah has it all and Kanab gets you close enough to bask in every bit of it.
